Description
Japans Wars - for the purpose of this eBook - we start with The Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 – 5 September 1905) was "the first great war of the 20th century." This came about mainly because of rival imperial ambitions of the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over Manchuria and Korea. We start here because it was the start of a series of Japanese “wars’ which ended only after the USA and her allies fought a series of land, sea and air battles forcing the Japanese to withdraw from most of its territorial gains - and take huge casualties - until finally Enola Gay, a Boeing B-29 Super fortress bomber, piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets on August 6th 1945, dropped the first Atomic Bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
Between the end of the Russo Japanese war in 1905 and the end of WW2 in 1945, Japan had fought a series of “wars” within China. Back then, China was not the major world power it is today. It was basically a “backward” country in terms of industrial and military development.
In 1927, China was involved with internal conflict against or for Communism. Japan took advantage and stages a series of brutal attacks within China, the most ‘famous’ being termed “The Rape of Nanking”.
During WW2, the western allies became aware of Japanese brutality as the Imperial Japanese Army moved down the Chinese mainland towards Burma and Singapore. The Americans in the Philippines were more or less abandoned to their fate and after supplies dwindled and food rationing lead to illness - which without medicines.. hospitalised more fighting men the Japanese bullets did.
Japan for all its early gains and brutality, could not have hoped to hold onto whatever territory it had plundered. They were too extended and their supply routed were gradually being blocked by western US and allied forces as they moved through the Pacific and China seas. Similarly, the same fate befell Hitler - grand ambitions - early gains, extended fronts and lack of supplies.
Both Japan and The German forces were forced backwards and choose to fight on rather than surrender.
This eBook sets out first to give the reader an overview of the wars between China and Japan and though this continued through WW2, the sea battles and the onward march of the Western Allies are not included in detail. They are in fact the subject of our previous book “War in the Pacific”.
In “Book 2” we present were possible a chronological progression through the years and offer such detail as we can locate with regard the individual “incidents”.
We advise that we have included a chapter on Japanese War crimes and the Death Units - which some may not wish to see. We have not included an text or images in the free Preview copy.
